Chapter House
This is
all that remains today of the fine twelve-sided Chapter House. The
Cistercian Monastery was founded in 1147 and was to become the
largest and wealthiest in Wales. The Margam Abbots were famous of
their support for Welsh poetry and literature. Like other
Cistercian Abbeys its economy depended mainly upon sheep rearing.
In 1536 Henry VIII brought the rein of the monks to a close when he
dissolved the religious houses of England and Wales.
