Becoming a Volunteer

How much time do I have to give?

It’s up to you!  We only ask for volunteers to give a minimum of 4 hours for each day that they volunteer at the park. 

What can I do?

We have a wide range of volunteer roles which all provide a fun, rewarding and memorable activities.  Take a look at our role descriptions for further information. 

Are there any age restrictions? 

Yes, volunteer roles are open to those aged 18 or over. 

Do I need previous experience?

Previous experience is required for some roles.  Volunteers develop new and existing skills ‘on the job’ and optional training will be provided free of charge when appropriate.

I am disabled, can I still volunteer?

Of course!  Our volunteer roles are varied so there are plenty of suitable tasks for all volunteers, whether you have disabilities or not.

 

Application Process

Why do you need 2 references?

To ensure our volunteers are suitable for the volunteer roles, we telephone or send a short letter to each applicant’s referees just to verify that the applicant has the required attitude and possess any relevant skills.

Who can I have as my 2 references?

Anyone who knows you and who are not family members.  For example, teachers, previous employers, work colleagues etc.  If you can’t think of 2 referees then please contact us, we’ll be happy to discuss this with you.

I have a criminal record; do I have to state this on the application form?

We only ask applicants to disclose any unspent convictions.  For advice on this, please visit the National Career Service website.

Expenses and Benefits

Will I be paid?

No, volunteers are not paid for the work they do.

What expenses will be paid?

All volunteers are encouraged to use public transport.  Free bus tickets will be issued to cover the cost of travelling to and from the park for volunteering activities.  Car mileage will be reimbursed up to the equivalent value of a bus ticket. 

Support and Mentoring

Will I receive training?

Yes, most of our volunteer training is conducted in-house by our experienced staff.  Additional externally delivered training courses will be provided to volunteers free of charge when appropriate and will be optional.

I have never volunteered before, will you provide support?

Our volunteers are fully supported by our Volunteer Coordinator to ensure our volunteers enjoy their volunteering experience at Margam Country Park.
