Who's on the Farm Trail?

We have three pygmy goats; Buttercup, Daisy and Bluebell.

● Pygmy goats are generally quiet and docile animals who enjoy having company.
● Pygmy goats remain a compact size, only growing up to 20 inches high. Despite their small size, they can produce large amounts of milk.
● Pygmy goats are great climbers and love to jump on rocks and logs.

We have two baby alpacas (cria); Taffi and Gwyn. Three adult alpacas are currently on loan from Penrhallt Alpacas until Spring 2023 to help the cria settle in; Roxie, Echo and Clover

• Alpaca fleece has very fine fibres and unlike sheep's wool is shiny, hairlike and does not contain any lanolin.
• A baby alpaca is called a ‘cria’, they can weigh just 6-8kg at birth.
• Alpacas can spit, producing not only saliva, but also acidic stomach contents (a smelly, green mix of grass!).

• Rabbits are the only mammals in the world that can see behind themselves without having to rotate their head.
• Rabbits aren’t native to Great Britain and were actually introduced about 900 years ago from France.
• The term ‘Warren’, which is used to describe rabbit colonies and burrows, comes from the name that was given to the walled enclosures that were built by Britons hundreds of years ago to keep their rabbits in.

We have the following breeds of sheep; Jacob, Black Welsh Mountain sheep, Badger Face and  Llanwenog.

• Both male and female Jacob sheep have horns.
• Black Welsh Mountain sheep are an ancient Welsh breed.
• The Badger Face sheep can have two distinct fleece colourings with different names. Torddu (Welsh for black belly) have pale bodies of white, grey or light brown, with dark face markings, and a stripe that goes from the chin to the end of the tail. Torwen (Welsh for white belly) is the opposite but the light markings are not so clearly defined.
• Llanwenogs produce some of the finest wool in the UK.

Pregnant women should avoid contact with sheep during the lambing season in early spring (March, April and May).

The Glamorgan Cattle are our speciality.

● Glamorgan Cattle were thought to be extinct in the 1920s. However in 1979 a herd was discovered in Sussex and relocated to Margam Country Park.
● Over 200 Glamorgan calves have been born in Margam Country Park since 1979.
● The cattle can be easily recognised by their chestnut coat and broad white stripe which runs along the backbone, down the tail and under the belly.

We have the following breeds of poultry:

• Silkie chickens
• Road Island Red chickens
• Bluebell chickens
• White Sussex chickens
• White Leghorn chickens
• Warrens
• Muscovy duck
• Turkey
• Peacock

We have two Shetland Ponies; Charlie and Gizmo. Charlie is Gizmo's father.

• Shetland ponies get their name from a group of islands off the north coast of Scotland.
• They are the strongest known horse for their size.
• Their thick and shaggy coat keeps them warm – it doubles in thickness in the winter.
• They’re easy to train and a popular first horse for young children.

We have two donkeys; Princess and Dylan.

• Donkeys can live for over 50 years, they are very strong and intelligent.
• They have an incredible memory - recognising areas and other donkeys that they were with up to 25 years ago.
• A donkey is able to hear the call of another 60 miles away.

We have British Saddleback, Tamworth and Welsh pigs.

• The British Saddleback is a modern British breed of domestic pig. They are very friendly and docile and great to be around.
• Tamworth Pigs are descended from the original Old Forest Pigs. In the 1970s there were only 17 boars left. They’ve made an amazing come-back thanks to the work of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
• The Welsh pig is white with lop ears meeting at the tips just short of the pig’s nose. The rare breed are famous for their hardiness, especially their ability to survive harsh weather. They are also pear-shaped when seen from above or the side.
