Margam Country Park is now part of the nationwide Chatty Café scheme. Our 'Chatter & Natter' tables can be used by our customers in our onsite cafe, Charlotte's Pantry.
The 'Chatter & Natter' tables are for those happy to talk to other customers. Everyone is welcome - If you’re on your own, in a couple, with a friend, fathers, mothers, grandparents and anyone in between!
The scheme is the brainchild of Alexandra Hoskyn, who founded it after a miserable day at a supermarket café with her infant son, where she noticed no one was talking to each other. She found that by simply putting Chatter and Natter signs on tables in cafes it created a space for people to talk.
The park has also recently provided four “Happy to Chat” park benches. Each of the benches have a sign stating: “Sit here if you don’t mind someone stopping to say HELLO!”
In the UK, more than a million older people say they always or often feel lonely, according to Age UK. A review found 17% of older people talk to family, friends or neighbours less than once a week. For many, it is even more scarce than that.
Some people may go days or even weeks without the simplest of human contact, so initiatives like the ‘Chat Benches’ and ‘Chatter and Natter’ tables seek to break down that social barrier and allow us to all say ‘hello’
So next time you are planning a day out why not pop to Margam Country Park for a chat? You will be very welcome!
