The Summer Academy will be held in Margam Castle and will take place in the same room each day meaning children will be used to the environment and parent’s will be dropping off and collecting the children from the same room each day,Do they get the weekend off?
The Summer Academy will be held from Monday to Friday during the first week and Monday to Thursday on the second week with a final performance on the final day (Thursday 16th August 2018). This means that children will have the weekend free and will return to the Academy on the Monday. What do they need to wear?
There is no uniform needed for the Summer Academy however we would ask that all students wear comfortable clothing that are easy to move in and suitable footwear is essential. Some warm up games or drama exercises may require the children to run, hop or jump around the room so it important that they have suitable footwear and clothing. For the actual showcase performance, we
will hopefully order some personalised T-Shirts which every member could wear and keep as a momentum from the course. The aim will be to sell these at an ad hock price per students with the intention of keeping this as low cast as possible.Do I need to stay?
Parents will not be required to stay at the Summer Academy. There will be a 20 minute introduction on the first morning of the course which will allow parents to pay the remaining course fees, meet the teaching team and ensure your child is comfortable. Parents will then be required to leave as the group takes part in fun team bonding exercises allowing them to make new friends and learn everyones names. Parents will then collect the children at 3:30pm. Teacher’s will update parents on what the students have been working on and also highlighting any achievements individuals have made during the session.Where can I park?
There is a public car park located on site just past the security kiosk as you enter Margam Park. During the first day we will require parents and guardians to accompany the children up to the Castle in order to be present for the initial induction. From the second day onwards, our teaching staff will meet you at the car park located outside the Orangery where they will escort the students to the Summer Academy room. This walk to the room will be part of the session and children will take part in games and activities during the journey. From day 2, our teaching staff will also walk the children back down to the car park for parents to collect them.Do they need to bring food?
Food will not be provided therefore children will be required to bring a packed lunch, snacks and plenty of water. There will be one main lunch break midday with additional opportunities for children to have a drink, grab a snack and go to the toilet.Do they have to attend every session?
Children are encouraged to attend every session in order to keep up to date on the material learnt in class and also to ensure that they can be as featured as possible in the final performance. If children are unable to attend a selection of the days or even a morning, we would ask that you notify our staff on the first day so that they can structure the lesson plans around your child’s attendance. For example, if your child wanted to perform a Matilda song in the final performance but you’re unable to attend Tuesday morning, our teachers can work on alternative activities in the morning so that your child doesn’t miss out. The course in non-refundable therefore there will be no discount for
children who miss some of the nine days. What will they do in each session?
Each day will include a variety of exercises which will aim to introduce the children to each other, discover which stories and tales the children enjoy working on, identify the strengths of each child and devise a final performance that showcases these strengths and ensure that all children are involved, motivated and having fun! Children will explore many drama techniques including improvisation, mime, spoken word and characterisation which will allow them to embody a number of Roald Dahls wonderful characters.
Students will learn routines from West End’s Matilda the Musical and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory before looking at the vocal score and staging solo and group ensemble numbers. Is my child too young?
There is currently no age restriction on the Summer Academy Experience however we believe that this is best enjoyed by children aged 5-18. A member of our team will be happy to discuss this further with you and discuss whether you feel your child would enjoy this experience. The style of this workshop will be relaxed and fun, there will be no stress or pressure! My child has allergies, do I need to make you aware?
Our teaching team will need to be made aware of all allergies and medical conditions on the first morning of the Summer Academy. Our team would also need to know about these prior to the first day so that we can notify other students if there is a food allergy that they need to be aware of before packing their children’s lunch boxes.
