The Lower Ground
- Looking away from the castle past New Pond is the lower ground. This open grassland is quite wet in places.
- The numerous ditches are full with frogspawn in early February.
- The reed areas provide nesting sites for the striking summer visitor the reed bunting.
- Much of this area is a favourite grazing area for the deer.
- One area of the lower ground supports a large colony of the tiny and rare Adder’s Tongue fern.
- In spring the whole area is pink with the flowers of Lady’s Smock.
