The Lower Ground

  • Looking away from the castle past New Pond is the lower ground. This open grassland is quite wet in places.
  • The numerous ditches are full with frogspawn in early February.

  • The reed areas provide nesting sites for the striking summer visitor the reed bunting.

  • Much of this area is a favourite grazing area for the deer.
  • One area of the lower ground supports a large colony of the tiny and rare Adder’s Tongue fern.

  • In spring the whole area is pink with the flowers of Lady’s Smock.
