The Stag

The Park is thrilled to announce the unveiling of 'The Stag', a stunning new sculpture.

We extend our thanks to The Friends of Margam Park for their support in bringing this incredible artwork to the park. This remarkable piece marks a return of the 'Steel in Nature' exhibit by Chris Crane Fine Art that graced the park in 2017.

Every detail of 'The Stag' reflects the artist's vision of turning recycled materials into a breath-taking work of art that inspires and sparks conversation. It truly reflects the creativity and passion of our community, highlighting the incredible ways art brings us closer to nature.

Chris works with reclaimed steel objects, rusty tools that have languished at the back of a shed, bits of metal that have washed up onto the beach, old farming equipment, and other remnants of the area’s industrial past. The stag is made from reclaimed steel, with many of the objects and parts still remaining visible.

• Two and a half lorry wheels make a large part of the body and neck.
• Horseshoes and plier handles were used in the ears and parts of the face, with scaffolding clamps creating the eyelids.
• The main form of the antlers is constructed from lifting spikes from an old tractor, with the points being made from the pointy end of podger spanners, along with the first two points, created from an old pick that was cut in half.
• Spanners were used in near enough every part of the sculpture, from forming the nostrils, legs, tail and hooves, along with many other objects and parts such as claw hammers, picks, hooks, bolts, old rebar and church door hinges.

These are merged together to create the whole form of the stag.
