The park has also recently provided four “Happy to Chat” park benches. Each of the benches have a sign stating: “Sit here if you don’t mind someone stopping to say HELLO!”.  So next time you are planning a day out why not pop to the Park for a chat? You will be very welcome!

Deer and Wildlife

Discovering Nature

The famous Margam Deer Herd today roams through approximately 500 acres (200 hectares) of parkland. It dates from Norman times, the herd, originally exclusively fallow, is of excellent genetic quality to rival any herd in the British Isles.

The relative freedom from disturbance and the wide variety of habitats in the Park have encouraged many different plants and animals to make the Park their home.

Among the more common mammals to be seen are foxes, badgers, hares, grey squirrels, voles and shrews. Moles are abundant on the lower parts of the park, their presence betrayed by molehills.

Mute Swans, Coots, Moorhens, Canadian Geese, Mallard, Tufted duck and Pochard inhabit the lakes, whilst the patient observer may see Kingfishers besides the streams. Skylarks, Stonechats and Wheatears can be seen over the grasslands with Buzzards, Kestrels and occasional Red Kite in the skies.

Castle and Gardens

Listed Grade I as a mansion of exceptional quality, the Castle has some spectacular features such as the vast stairhall and octagonal tower.

The house was built in 1830 – 40 at a cost of £50,000 using sandstone from nearby Pyle quarry. Listed Grade I as a mansion of exceptional quality, the Castle has some spectacular features such as the vast stairhall and octagonal tower.

In our gardens you are surrounded by beautiful trees, shrubs and flowers, classic and modern planting, lakes and long vistas which have evolved since medieval times.

Play Areas & Farm Trail

Glamorgan cattle, Llanwenog and Badger Face sheep, Welsh pigs and Buff Orpington hens are just some of the interesting rare breed animals that you can see on the farm trail.
